Dr. Eckehard Brockerhoff
New Zealand – a Biodiversity Hotspot

For 80 million years New Zealand evolved in isolation, resulting in a biodiversity hotspot, with many species found nowhere else on earth. On land, more than 80% of the vascular plants and 90% of the insects are endemic, along with all of the reptiles, a many birds and terrestrial mammals. Ecosystems are also highly distinctive, Including kauri forests, extensive braided river systems, karst landscapes, restiad peat bogs, coal measures, geothermal systems, and seamounts.
